One of our worst fears is to have our identity stolen, so to prevent this we don’t carry around our social security card. We are cautious about who we give our information to over the phone, and we shred all important documents. Not much we can do when the credit bureaus itself has been hacked. Come to find out a credit Bureaus was hacked. Equifax has shockingly been hacked. Equifax has stepped up to do what they can to protect your identity due to a breech into their account. Equifax is offering free credit monitoring and protection. Having something like this happens has us all questioning is our credit safe enough and how can we make sure it is.
Steps To Take To Protect Your Credit
You can start by checking your credit report. You know what should be on there and if you see something that doesn’t look right, make a phone call and follow up on it. It might be something you don’t remember or it could be someone has stolen your identity and is now using your credit. If you happen to lose your wallet place a freeze on your bank and credit cards right away. Do not wait you can always unfreeze once you find your wallet and if you don’t find your wallet you’ll be at peace knowing you froze your accounts right away giving less time for anybody to use your cards. This is an old one but it still apply, always be careful who you give your information to over the phone plus online, and what kind of information you give them. If you call a customer service line and they ask you for your social or account number, I know it’s convenient to give your social but try to have that account number ready instead. That is just an extra precaution.
